Our rating of the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741: Four Stars
Body and Construction
Because the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 Coffee Brewer is unlike most other coffee brewers that we generally use, we are going to look into its parts, components and operation before reviewing any other features.
The Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 Coffee Brewer comprises of 4 main parts: the water tank which holds the water. the copper boiling element which sits inside the housing below the storage tank. The brewing basket next to the tank, and under it, a thermal carafe.
The carafe is made out of stainless steel and every other part is pretty durable and study. It isn’t the most compact machine (measures 7.1 x 12.2 x 15.4 inches in dimensions), but is pretty lightweight (weighs 6.5 pounds). Looks wise, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 Coffee Brewer goes somewhere along the lines of modern meets retro and vintage.
Performance and power factors in this machine is pretty awesome. The copper boiling element. (single most important part of the whole coffee maker that’s responsible for making those excellent cups) can reach a soaring temperature of 196° to 206°, which is optimal for getting the best out of your coffee ground. Resulting in the extraction of natural flavor and sweetness of the beans, without giving allowing in that bitter, burnt and acidic aftertaste.
The shortfall of this machine would be its water temperature issue where the machine fails to regulate water temperature (for example: when hot water is poured in, it gets piping hot. When cold water is poured, and it gets just hot). This can be pretty inconvenient and can result in inconsistent results.
The Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 Coffee Brewer can make as much as 10 ounces of coffee. That said, you can also opt to make as little as you like.
Ease of use
Apart from its lightweight, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 Coffee Brewer is also very easy to operate. It in fact has no button to do all any fancy stuff, simply switch on the power button and it gets to work. Its plastic components are all BPA-free and are so easy to clean. It also features a manually adjustable drip-stop basket which allows users to control the pour and therefore, the intensity of the brew.
Probably one of our favorite features is the hot plate. The hot plate is what the carafe thermal flask sits on, and this Coffee Brewer actually has a heated hot plate! Furthermore, the temperature of the hot plate is kept between 80°C to 85°C to ensure that the coffee stays hot while not losing any of its flavor complexities. And finally, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 also comes with auto shut/off mechanism.
Credibility & Warranty
The Technivorm Moccamaster KBT-741 Coffee Brewer is approved by the ECBC. In other words, this machine follows and meets the standards and guidelines of the European Coffee Brewing Center. Every order or the Technivorm also comes with a 5-year warranty.
How Does It Compare?
If you are looking for something that echoes the features of the KBT-741, then the BV1900TS from Bonavita is probably as close as you can get.
This coffee maker is a lesser expensive and does more or less everything the KBT can, but lacks in terms of volume and capacity. It is also pretty tiny! Which is actually perfect for individuals with small kitchen space and countertops.
If you are into the functions and programmable features in your coffee maker, then the Barista Brain from OXO is definitely a machine to check out.
This coffee maker utilizes a micro-processor controlled brewing cycle, has intuitive LED lights, timer and a clock. Yep. A clock. This thing can basically wakes you up! The Barista Brain is no match for the KBT’s make and size, but it’s superior in terms of technological functions. Ideal for people who can use a morning wake-up call as well!
Another coffee maker with technical functions, the KF7175 Brew Sense coffee maker by Braun.
